A good marriage will likely need to have every one of these five types of LOVE--and have them in healthy helpings.
1. Strong Sex interest. Hornell Hart used to tell his classes at Duke that 3 things had to be true for human race to survive. We had to (a) get our breakfast, (b) avoid being someone else's breakfast, and (c) have at least a passing interest in sex.
Well, for most of us,interest in sex is a trifle more than passing. Couples normally do have strong erotic feelings for each other. A good marriage includes mutual joy and satisfaction in sex.
Yet it is quite possible to give sex an importance far beyond what it deserves. Sex is important, but it is only one of many important parts of a good relationship.
2.RESPECT and ADMIRATION. Couples need to have a strong mutual attraction and hold each other in high regard.
3.FRIENDSHIP and FELLOWSHIP. Couples also need to be true comrades. They need to have many things in common--the more the better. They must like each other a lot, and be the best of friends.
4.Affection. And, of course, there must be tender feelings. Each partner should provide the other with a haven of refuge from harsh attacks in the outside world. We all need sympathy and empathy to soothe our hurts. We need to be understood. LOVE can mean a sholuder to cry on when our burdens are too heavy to bear alone.
5. Self-giving devotion. Finally, a good marriage has to have a good deal of agape love. All of us have some unlovable traits. A spouse must at times love not becauseof, but in spite of, the other person's faults. you will have to love your mate even durinf those times when you fell he or she does not deserve it. Like you, your spouse(husband) may sometimes not be very lovable. Your mate may at times be cranky, or lose their temper, or be depressed, or not want to talk to you. that will take some agape love on your part.
A good marriage will have a heavy sprinkilng of every one of these kinds of love. More than that, no one of them (with the possible exception of friendship) is enough in itself to build and sustain a healthy marriage. A balance of all five is a much better bet.
